Shih Tzu Puppies in TN

Shih Tzu Puppies for Sale in Tennessee

What to know before a Shih Tzu comes home to Tennessee.

Tennessee gives a Shih Tzu a gentle life with a few warm-weather catches. Big front porches and a friendly pace make it a good place for a small companion dog. Spring is mild and green, fall is crisp, and winters are usually short. The sticky stretch from June to September is the part that needs thought, along with mosquitoes, ticks and severe storms.

Nashville is about 1,570 miles from Sedona, but that matters less than it sounds: anywhere from Nashville to Chattanooga, a flight nanny can carry a puppy in the cabin to your nearest airport, or ground transport can drive it to your door. Before leaving, every puppy has a vet check, the vaccinations due for its age and its worming, whether it goes to Knoxville or Nashville.

How Will Your Puppy Reach You in Tennessee?

Nashville is about 1,570 miles from me in Sedona, Arizona. For a distance like this, a flight nanny is the quickest way: your puppy stays with the nanny in the cabin and meets you at your local airport. Ground transport, driven the whole way to your door, works too, and so does a trip to Arizona to meet me in person. No puppy ever travels as cargo. How puppies get home.

A Shih Tzu in Your Part of Tennessee

Nashville

Nashville is a busy, growing city: condos in the Gulch and downtown, bungalows in East Nashville, and big suburbs beyond. A Shih Tzu fits in every one of them. Centennial Park is a good place for an easy walk, and many bars and patios welcome dogs outside. Apartment buildings often have pet rules, so check them before you commit to a lease.

Memphis

Memphis is hot, humid and slow in the best way. Many families have a house with a yard, and the summer pushes everyone indoors from midday until evening. Shelby Farms Park offers a big place to walk in cooler months, with room for a small dog to stretch. Because of the river and low ground, mosquitoes are a real concern here.

Knoxville

Knoxville is hilly and green, with a walkable downtown around Market Square and neighborhoods full of older homes. The Smoky Mountains are close, but most Great Smoky Mountains National Park trails do not allow dogs, so plan other hikes. For a Shih Tzu, the yard, a stroll along the river and a quiet street are plenty. Check the coat for ticks after woods.

Chattanooga

Chattanooga sits along the Tennessee River among ridges, with a lively riverfront and neighborhoods on the hills. Coolidge Park is a popular place for dog walkers, and families on Signal Mountain and Lookout Mountain have yards and shady streets. The hills are steep, so a Shih Tzu is often better carried up the toughest climbs than asked to walk them.

Tennessee Hazards for a Small, Flat-Faced Dog

Mosquitoes and heartworm

Tennessee is warm and humid, and mosquitoes are active for much of the year. They spread heartworm, which damages a dog's heart and lungs and is expensive to treat. Ask your vet about monthly heartworm prevention from the start, and have your dog tested yearly. Empty standing water in your yard, since a flowerpot saucer is enough for mosquitoes to breed.

Ticks and tall grass

Ticks live in tall grass, brush and wooded edges across the state. Lyme-carrying ticks have been turning up in East Tennessee. A Shih Tzu's long coat hides them. After time outdoors, check around the ears, neck, belly and toes. Keep your yard mowed and talk to your vet about prevention that suits a small dog.

Heat, humidity and spring storms

Summer air is thick, and a short-nosed Shih Tzu has trouble cooling. Keep walks to early morning and evening, and keep your dog out of parked cars. Spring is also severe storm and tornado season. Know your safe room before a warning sounds, and keep a carrier, a leash, a few days of food and your dog's health records where you can grab them fast.

Day to Day With a Shih Tzu in Tennessee

Life with a Shih Tzu in Tennessee is slow and warm. For much of the year you can sit on the porch and let the dog watch the street, and a gentle walk after supper is plenty of exercise. Summer needs a plan, with air conditioning, shade and water close at hand. Winter is mild enough that a sweater and quick walks cover most days. The long coat picks up burrs and grass seeds from yards and trails, so brush it every day or two, or ask for a short puppy cut that stays cleaner through the humid months. Housebreaking can be slow, especially in rain, so keep a pad near the door. A Shih Tzu is happy in a small apartment or a big house, as long as someone is around. It does not like long hours alone. It is usually patient with children and other pets.

Tennessee Questions, Answered

01

Does a Shih Tzu need heartworm prevention in Tennessee?

Yes. Tennessee has plenty of mosquitoes and heartworm is common, so vets recommend year-round monthly prevention for puppies and adults. Your vet will start your puppy at the right age and test once a year. It is far cheaper and easier than treating heartworm once a dog has it.

02

Can a Shih Tzu take a Tennessee summer?

With care, yes. Keep your Shih Tzu in air conditioning during the day, walk early or late, and bring water. Short-nosed dogs overheat quickly in humidity, so watch for heavy panting and slow movement. Never leave your dog in a parked car, and keep outdoor play brief and in the shade.

03

Can a Shih Tzu puppy fly to Tennessee?

Yes, in the cabin. A flight nanny carries your puppy on a commercial flight, under the seat in front of them, and hands it to you at the airport that serves Nashville. It is never sent as cargo.
