Shih Tzu Puppies for Sale in Maryland

Shih Tzu puppies, and Shih Tzu life, across Maryland.

Maryland is small but varied: row houses in Baltimore, busy suburbs outside Washington, a sailing town on the Chesapeake and farm country in the hills. For a Shih Tzu, most of that means close, indoor living with short outings, which suits the breed well. The weather is the real variable, with muggy summers, icy winters treated with salt, and the occasional storm off the Atlantic. A little planning keeps a small dog easy to live with through all of it.

From Sedona, Arizona, I plan the trip to the DC suburbs, Annapolis and every other corner of Maryland, in the cabin or by road, never as cargo. Before leaving, every puppy has a vet check, the vaccinations due for its age and its worming, whether it goes to Annapolis or Baltimore.

How Will Your Puppy Reach You in Maryland?

Baltimore is about 2,230 miles from me in Sedona, Arizona. For a distance like this, a flight nanny is the quickest way: your puppy stays with the nanny in the cabin and meets you at your local airport. Ground transport, driven the whole way to your door, works too, and so does a trip to Arizona to meet me in person. No puppy ever travels as cargo. How puppies get home.

A Shih Tzu in Your Part of Maryland

Baltimore

Baltimore is a city of row houses, and a small dog fits one nicely. Neighborhoods like Canton, Federal Hill and Fells Point have narrow streets and plenty of dog walkers, and Patterson Park is a popular place for a short loop. Stoops and steep front steps are common, so a puppy needs to learn them gently, and you may want to carry a very young one.

The DC suburbs

In Bethesda, Silver Spring and Rockville, many people live in apartments and condos with elevators, lobbies and building rules about dogs. Read your lease before bringing a puppy home, because weight and breed limits vary. Shih Tzus handle elevator living well, and sidewalks and small neighborhood parks make short daily walks easy even without a yard.

Annapolis

Annapolis is a waterfront town of narrow brick streets near the City Dock and the Naval Academy. A Shih Tzu enjoys an evening stroll there, but the downtown pavement can get very hot in July and the cobbles are rough on tiny paws. When storms and high tides push water into the low streets, plan to keep your dog out of puddles.

Frederick

Frederick has a walkable historic downtown, with shops and patios along Market Street, and neighborhoods of townhouses and yards around it. Baker Park offers a gentle path and a pond, a pleasant destination for a short outing. Beyond town the land turns to farms and woods toward the Catoctin Mountains, so ticks are worth watching if you hike nearby.

Maryland Hazards for a Small, Flat-Faced Dog

Road salt and de-icers

When snow or ice is forecast, Maryland towns and many apartment complexes spread salt and chemical melt on sidewalks and steps. These can sting and dry out small paws, and a dog that licks its feet may swallow some. Wipe your Shih Tzu's feet and belly with a warm damp cloth after each winter walk, and trim the hair between the toes so ice and salt do not cake there.

Ticks and Lyme disease

Maryland has a lot of ticks, and Lyme disease is well established across the state, including in suburban parks and wooded lots. Check your dog after any walk where the grass is tall or the leaves are deep, especially around the ears, chest and between the toes. A long coat hides them, so a regular brushing session doubles as a tick check. Ask your vet about preventives.

Humid summers

Maryland summers are hot and damp, with stretches in July and August when the air hardly cools overnight. A Shih Tzu's short muzzle makes panting less effective, so walk early or late, keep water close, and let an air-conditioned room be the daytime hangout. Never leave a puppy in a parked car, and keep outdoor time in the shade.

Day to Day With a Shih Tzu in Maryland

Maryland suits a small dog that likes company. Most families here live in townhouses, apartments or compact suburban homes, and a Shih Tzu is happy in any of them as long as someone is around. Commuters should plan for the day: a dog that is left alone for long hours can become anxious, so a reliable midday visit or a gradual routine for the first weeks helps. The coat needs regular attention in every season. Many owners choose a puppy cut to cope with humid summers and slushy winters, while a longer coat needs daily brushing to stay free of mats. Exercise is modest, two or three short walks and a little play at home. House training can take time, and a pee pad by the door helps during cold snaps and storms. Shih Tzus are typically friendly with children and get along with other pets, which makes them a good fit for busy households.

Maryland Questions, Answered

01

Can I keep a Shih Tzu in a Baltimore row house?

Yes, and many people do. A Shih Tzu needs little space, and a row house with a small yard or a nearby park is plenty. Be ready for steps: a young puppy should be carried or helped on stairs. Short walks around the block and some indoor play will cover most of its daily exercise.

02

How should I care for a Shih Tzu's paws in a Maryland winter?

Wipe the feet and belly with a warm damp cloth after every walk to remove salt and de-icer, and keep the hair between the toes trimmed. Check for ice balls clumping in the coat. A dog coat or booties can help on cold days, and short outings are better than a long walk in freezing weather.

03

Can a Shih Tzu puppy fly to Maryland?

Yes, in the cabin. A flight nanny carries your puppy on a commercial flight, under the seat in front of them, and hands it to you at the airport that serves Baltimore. It is never sent as cargo.
